For Your Christmas Gift Giving and Viewing Pleasure

Sunday November 30, 2008
If you scoped the last blog entry, you now have a good idea of some great reading material for your surfing loved one. That begs the question: What if my surfing loved one doesn't read? How about a DVD under the tree to get him/her stoked for the incoming Yule tide? That's right...Yule tide. Most surf videos fall in specific categories. You got your quick-cut splash blast of stoke variety. These flicks are generally accompanied by insane guitar driven scream rock (and some occasional hip hop) and usually focus on bigger than life pro surfer personas. Shallow but awesome. Then you have your focused learning series. These videos might teach you a skill or show you some fitness techniques. Educational and healthy, but not as gut-punchingly exciting. We can't forget the travel vid which pans slowly in wide angle fashion across picturesque pseudo secret spots and allows the viewer to take in the local flora and fauna as well as some of the local culture all under the influence of soothing reggae and hypnotic acoustic riffs . This herbal organica will make you smile. Lastly, there's the standard documentary geared for a wider general audience. These movies are usually characterized by higher production values and exploration of universal themes beyond sponsors and launching airs. Your non-surfing significant other will thank you for this. Of course, all these films have something to offer, so think about your giftee and his/her personality and then check out these reviews to give your holiday amp some focus:
