This one is one of my favorites.

In our world of corporate, cookie-cutter surf apparel, the vast majority of clothing is either cheesy, over-priced, or both. The few big companies have the industry in a strangle hold, filling malls and surf shops alike with the same old swag. However, many small, grassroots companies have been struggling to break through and get noticed. To do this, a company has to create a product with soul, integrity, and quality.

Recently, I came across Betty Belts, the passion of Donna Van Hoesslin. Inspired by surfing and the ocean itself, Donna began Betty Belts from her home in the shadow of the icy, monstrous swells of Santa Cruz. Using her connections in the surf industry and local word of mouth, Donna is breaking through. Betty Belts are now sold in over 90 stores around the country and has been featured in several publications such as SG Magazine, Surf Life for Women, and Lucky

Betty Belts are handmade in Indonesia using high-quality, all-natural materials. I found the two styles I tested to be both sturdy and stylish and screaming of the surfing lifestyle. Earthy enough to please the most hardened hippy and hip enough to attract fashion conscious city folk, Betty Belts possess a timeless essence.

The most impressive aspect to me is the unique and various styles offered. The two styles I tested are very different, and I especially enjoyed the pearlescent shells and casual look. These belts can be worn low and loose with jeans for some radical flare or traditionally for a more formal look. Most styles have a feminine slant, but some are unisex and look quite cool on guys also. These belts are functional, fashionable, and add surf-style to any ensemble. Qualifying as more than a mere accessory, the Adonia (the style my wife is currently sporting) looks especially sweet with shorts or jeans. I am enjoying it as much as she is.

In addition to belts, Betty Belts makes necklaces and (even more impressively) sponsors several hot, female surfers, promoting women’s surfing on every level. In the big corporate pool, Betty Belts may be a small fish, but with quality products, timeless style, and a grassroots attitude, this company is sure to succeed.
