Delamination

By Jay DiMartino, About.com

delamination

The older a board gets the more common delamination becomes.

Jay DiMartino
Definition: The term "delamination" refers to a common surfboard problem. Delamination occurs when the outer fiberglass coating separates from the foam core(or blank). This forms a bubble of air that will split open if left untreated, and this leads to water-weight, yellowing, and dangerously sharp edges. Delamination occurs most commonly from age and most horribly when you leave your surfboard in a car on the hot sun.

Dlamination happens most frequently on the tail from the constant weight of the surfer's back foot.

Pronunciation: dee-lam-in-ashun
Also Known As: (slang) delam
Examples: I don't know if this board is worth $150 because of all the delamination on the tail.
