Pit

By Jay DiMartino, About.com

vetea david tahiti

For the record, "pit" can also be used as a verb. Vetea David is nothing but "pitted" in Tahiti.

Definition: This noun refers to the trough (bottom curve) of a very hollow wave. The pit is where the most critical of bottom turns must be completed and where a surfer must navigate in order to set his/her line through the tube. the pit is normally the deepest (or closest to the breaking lip and whitewater)that a surfer can be without being sucked up by the barrel. Surfers can also (when the tern is used as a verb) be pitted or get pitted when surfing.
Also Known As: gut, innards
Examples: Mate, did you see that last wave? That guy just free fell into the pit and got worked!
