How to Buy a Surfboard

By , About.com Guide

Before heading to the surfshop to buy a surfboard, be sure to read Choosing your First Surfboard to get the basics in purchasing surfboards.

1.Don't be Rushed into Buying a Board

Most surf shop employees are super cool and will help you with all your questions, but some unethical folks will spot a newbie from a mile away and talk you into buying a surfboard you don't need or won't help you learn to surf.

So if you feel rushed...take a breath and remember these basic tips.

2.Be Sure the Surfboard you buy has Everthing you Need

Honestly, you won't need much, but you do need fins and they should be included in the price. If they are not, be sure to buy a set or you can't go surfing. Also, make sure you leave with a few bars of wax and a leash.

To review, your surfboard needs fins, wax, and a leash.

3.Be Open to Other Alternatives

Just because all the cool dudes and chicks are riding a specific type of surfboard, don't be suckered into to buying the same type of board. There are literally hundreds of alternatives, so look at all your options and don't worry about looking uncool. Longboards and softboards and funboards are all ways to help you get more waves and learn more quickly, so don't worry about about image.
