Is the ocean the only place you can surf?

By , About.com Guide

Question: Is the ocean the only place you can surf?
Answer: Strangely enough, no. There have always been surf legends telling of endless waves swirling through exotic rivers full of crocodiles pirranah. However, those stories became more and more believable when kids began riding the rushing rain water at rivermouths like the one at Waimea Bay. If you've never seen it (I've actually done it), kids jump on the rushing water flowing over the bumpy beach sand and ride its stationary waves until the water subsides. Then there is Colorado's Snake River with its endless wedge (I'm sure river rafters have seen countless similar examples) and finally the video evidence of tidal bores down such rivers as the Amazon and the Nile. Guys are riding these mile long swells with boats following along to catch them if they fall. It's quite amazing. And finally, check out this contest in South America held on one such wave. And let us not forget the advancements in wave pool technology. Ron Jon's Surf Shop is planning its very own surfing amusement park with an endless supply of phenominal waves on hand.
