El Salvador and Nicaragua are jam packed with warm water and juicy point breaks. Hooking up with a surf camp or guide would be the smartest thing for novice surfers since the driving through foreign countries and paddling out at unfamiliar surf spots can prove to be dangerous without local knowledge. Otherwise, I have heard great reports about both the constant surf and minimal crowds.
Peru is an interesting country with loads of long waves to ride. In fact, Peru boasts one of the longest waves in the world, Pico Alto, as well as some great big wave surfing. But, Ive been trying to steer you toward some warm water, and Perus section of ocean can get quite frigid. Dont forget to pack a full suit.
If you really have a taste for classic barrels and rich culture, fly over to Bali where spots like Uluwatu and G-land (among many others) await you. The crowds can get a bit dense, but there is a plethora of islands to explore with some the best summertime waves in the world.
Finally, Mentawais just across the drink from Africa is riddled with islands, reef passes, and atolls that are merely an expensive boat trip away. Here, you can find waves for every level. This area has been called the Disney World of surfing. In addition to all the areas Ive mentioned, all the southern facing coasts of Australia, Hawaii, and Africa are also fine destinations, but I find surf travel to be a search for unusual, uncrowded, and warm conditions.
