These are real characters surfing hard and smiling big for the camera under the Golden Gates glow, loving the moment and looking forward to the next wave the next beer the next companion. Theyre not role models, but neither are most people. And while the level of surfing isnt world class, neither is yours or mine. This is real surfing that gets you stoked to ride your waves, not Tahiti.
The folks who made this film even admit that they might not be the best surfers but I disagree. What this film offers is an honest glimpse of a local scene.
Every local spot has its parking lot antics, its night time festivities, and, of course, some epic moments in the lineup.
Whats more is that the less-capable surfers featured entertain us out of the water with hard-partying and witty hijinx that highlight the local culture and the individual personalities that make up this colorful, hard core surf scene set to the hard sounds and harder cityscape images of San Francisco.
Wet and Wreckless is gritty, but it never ventures to the depths of a Run Man flick. There is no feces and only a little blood letting, and there is a lot of surfing.
It may not be the best gift for your 10-year-old nephew, but it made me laugh and got me stoked.
