San Franpsycho: Wet and Wreckless

About.com Rating four out of Five

By Jay DiMartino, About.com

“Two years of Ocean Beach debauchery, and mayhem!” That’s the pitch for a new surf flick out of San Francisco affectionately called San Franpsycho: Wet and Wreckless.
Yeah, there are plenty of fights, pranks, vomit, booze-guzzling, and affectionate young ladies; however, there’s plenty of solid surfing ta boot. This video doesn’t boast loads of high paid superstars blowing the lids off Indian Ocean grinders. Instead, we view real surfers pushing themselves into grinding beach break barrels, sometimes making it and sometimes not.

These are real characters surfing hard and smiling big for the camera under the Golden Gate’s glow, loving the moment and looking forward to the next wave…the next beer…the next companion. They’re not role models, but neither are most people. And while the level of surfing isn’t world class, neither is yours or mine. This is real surfing that gets you stoked to ride your waves, not Tahiti.

The folks who made this film even admit that “they might not be the best surfers…” but I disagree. What this film offers is an honest glimpse of a local scene.

Every local spot has its parking lot antics, its night time festivities, and, of course, some epic moments in the lineup.

What’s more is that the less-capable surfers featured entertain us out of the water with hard-partying and witty hijinx that highlight the local culture and the individual personalities that make up this colorful, hard core surf scene set to the hard sounds and harder cityscape images of San Francisco.

Make no mistake, some of these guys rip hard. There are surfers like this at every spot who are kings of their zone, every bit the surf star in the immediate vicinity. It’s awesome! It’s what makes each generation push to be better than the last. It’s the culture that creates great surfers and sometimes destroys young lives, but it’s real.

Wet and Wreckless is gritty, but it never ventures to the depths of a Run Man flick. There is no feces and only a little blood letting, and there is a lot of surfing.

It may not be the best gift for your 10-year-old nephew, but it made me laugh and got me stoked.
