Surfboard History at a Glance

By Jay DiMartino, About.com

The surfboard originated in Polynesia back around 400 A.D. Then the Hawaiians made huge surfboards from island trees. But it didn't take long for these magic carpets to land in the states.

Your basic surfboard is anywhere between 18 and 25 inches wide, between 5 and 8 feet long and 1.5 to 3 inches thick. Most modern surfboards are made of light weight foam and made strong with fiberglass and resin.

Modern surfboards arose in 1958. Hobie Alter produced polyurethane foam core boards and developed glassing techniques with polyester resins to strengthen them.

Fiberglass surfboards were born in 1946 and were made of two molded halves and a redwood stringer to strengthen its center. Bob Simmons built the first board with a styrofoam core in 1949.

Today, surfboards are often made of epoxy resins and even various environmentally friendly materials.
