Slab

By Jay DiMartino, About.com

Definition: This is yet another new entry to the American surfing lexicon, although Australian surfers have been using this term for years. A slab is a noun that refers to any shallow reef or rock shelf over which very steep and powerful waves break. The term has come to be more closely associated with newly found waves and mysto breaks that break hard in the middle of a large expanse of water. However, there have been slabs right in front of us for years. Pipeline is a particularly nasty slab as is Mavericks (which is relatively shallow, of course, to the massive size of its waves). Many slabs have some manner of exposed reef and rock to add to their slabby-ness.
Also Known As: reef break
Examples: You found that wave? Man, I've been surfing that slab for years.
