Definition: A tail waft is a noun phrase that refers to a modern surf trick. The tail waft is essentially a tail slide in which the surfer unweights the back foot and lets the fins break loose from the wave. But in a tail waft, the "wafting" occurs once the surfer hits the lip and applies the tail slide behind and then across the feathering lip (with the stringer perpindicular to the lip), giving the surfer a chance to glide (like a skateboard boardslide)with the tail and fins extended out the back of the wave while the midpoint of the board remains on the wave. A tail waft is very functional in ultra clean waves and hollow waves where lip tricks are sometimes less spectacular.
Examples: Instead of waiting for the barrel, Taj went for a sick tail waft across that section and really impressed the judges with his creativity.
